The C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory(CAPHIL) is located within the Department of Anthropology at the University of Florida. The CAPHIL is located on the ground floor of the Cancer & Genetics Research Complex on the corner of Mowry Road and Gale Lemerand Drive on the UF campus. The laboratory was endowed by the late C. Addison and Annie Pound. This endowment funds basic operating expenses in support of the laboratory’s mission. The CAPHIL provides consultation services for Medical Examiners, law enforcement agencies, and attorneys, assisting with determination of the identity of the decedent and cause and manner of death. We recently celebrated the 45th anniversary of forensic anthropology at the University of Florida.

The CAPHIL is managed by Director Dr. Phoebe R. Stubblefield.

The CAPHIL is staffed with doctoral graduate analysts from multiple subfields of Anthropology, and a team of select volunteers.  We are now accepting applications for FALL 2023 volunteer positions.  A limited number of positions are available–email poundlab@anthro.ufl.edu for the application.

Applicants with the following qualities are sought:

  • A passing grade in Human Osteology of B or better
  • A statement of suitability as a volunteer is required, drawn from a UF faculty member, preferably in the Anthropology department
  • Ability to attend a group or individual interview
  • Ability to pass a background check is required

During the application window, please email us at poundlab@anthro.ufl.edu to request an application.  A one-credit research opportunity may be available for a maximum of two volunteers; please inquire in your request email if you are interested.

The Spring 2024 CAPHIL Volunteer Application window is now open.  We are accepting applications until January 12, 2024.  Opportunities are limited by scheduling, but we try to accommodate as many applicants as we can.

The faculty and staff conduct casework and perform research in biological anthropology, forensic identification, skeletal trauma analysis, and a diversity of topics within the field of Biological Anthropology. The CAPHIL complies with ISO17020 and Supplemental Standards, as well as the best practice guidelines and minimum standards for the discipline as established by the SWGANTH and the NIST OSAC subcommittee on forensic anthropology.  We can be reached at (352) 273-8320, and by email at poundlab@anthro.ufl.edu.

Donations:  Monetary donations to the mission of the laboratory are welcome. To make your donation to the Pound Endowment at the UF Foundation, please contact Ms. Karen Jones at 352-392-2253.   How do donations help?  They help us update technology (digital microscopes, for example), provide travel funds both to crime scenes and professional development activities, and support transport costs for those individuals who join the CAPHIL family as an anatomical gift.
